Finding a Latitude and Longitude

Top  Previous  Next

There are several ways to find a latitude and longitude of a particular point.  Here are some easy ways to work out your required Latitudes and Longitudes.

1.Use Google Maps to find the point
2.Use MapKi
3.Use a GPS
4.Use a GPS enabled camera to take a photo at that point

Please see the Latitude and Longitude Formats information as well.

Use Google Maps to find the point

1.go to http://maps.google.com
2.type in some search criteria to find a place nearby the point you need to find
3.move the map around, zoom in and out to find the exact location you require
4.use the satellite image if that will help you identify the terrain, roads, buildings or landmarks
5.position the point you need right in the middle of the map view
6.copy the "link to this map" URL
7.paste this into notepad, word or some other text editor
8.locate the Latitude and Longitude coordinates from within the URL

for example in the URL below the Lat/Long are highlighted in red.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=canberra&ie=UTF8&ll=-35.282039,149.128675&spn=0.002076,0.005021&z=18

Use MapKi to find the Lat/Long

This tool prints the Lat/Long at the bottom of the page, but you can't search, so you need to zoom into the Google map.  Easier to find the Lat/Long then Google Maps method above, but more work to get to your destination.

Use a GPS

Simply go to the point you want the position of and read it off the screen or save a waypoint!

If the GPS cannot display the Lat/Long in decimal format, please see Latitude and Longitude Formats

Use a GPS enabled camera to take a photo at that point

Take a picture at the point you want to save, then use the Chiizu EXIF Reader application to view the GPS details.
